Hospital Births

The majority of Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM) in Vermont attend labor and births in the hospital setting.

A hospital setting provides access to medical resources that may be beneficial in certain situations. It provides reassurance to most women.

CNMs know that women can be empowered by being involved with their health care. When they are taught about options, given choices and allowed to make informed decisions, empowerment occurs.

Most women who choose a CNM for a hospital birth desire an unmedicated birth, the benefits of natural birth, support for the individual, and the uniqueness of each labor. Some women choose other options.

Sometimes women choose options related to medication in labor, epidural analgesia or elective cesearean section. Like other decisions in pregnancy, women make informed choice and plans for their births with their CNM.
