About Us

Certified Nurse-Midwives are Advance Practice Registered Nurses. This is similar to a Nurse Practitioner but a CNM has a specialty in pregnancy, labor, birth and gynecology. We are nationally certified and must pass rigorous academic standards of Nurse-Midwifery Programs. Most CNMs also have Master's or PhD in a related field such as Nursing, Public Health or Education.

In Vermont, CNMs are licensed by the Vermont Board of Nursing. In accordance to the Standards of Practice of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the State of Vermont, a CNM works with Physicians and other Health Care Professionals when indicated by Practice Guidelines. Physicians are available to collaborate, consult and refer clients as indicated. Nurse-Midwives in Vermont have prescriptive privileges.

The Vermont Chapter of the American College of Nurse Midwives are Certified Nurse Midwives committed to the quality of care for women and the profession of Nurse Midwifery in Vermont. All Certified Nurse Midwives may be members of their state chapter/professional organization. Annual dues are collected.

The purpose of the chapter is to allow for the growth of professional and collegial relationships, to problem solve and educate each other, to establish and maintain a Peer Review Process, to address legislative issues in healthcare and to raise public awareness about Nurse-Midwifery.

Additionally, Vermont Chapter offers two scholarships on an annual basis to a Vermont Chapter Member to attend our annual convention and also to a Nurse Midwifery student who resides in Vermont.

We meet quarterly for our regular meetings throughout the state.
